Hanes - History

The pibgorn (hornpipe) has been played in Wales for over a thousand years. There are similar instruments throughout Europe. The earliest written record of the Pibgorn in Wales can be found in the laws of Hywel Dda, a Welsh King from the 9th Century.

It is often thought of as an instrument played by shepherds, however, it could also be heard at the Royal Courts of Wales alongside the Crwth and Harp. Today you can see the Pibgorn played by many Welsh folk musicians e.g. Carreg Lafar and Calan. It is also  growing in popularity internationally amongst musicians from Europe and the United States.
