History – Hanes
The pibgorn (hornpipe) has been played in Wales for over a thousand years. There are similar instruments throughout Europe. The earliest written record of the Pibgorn in Wales can be found in the laws of Hywel Dda, a Welsh King from the 9th Century.
It is often thought of as an instrument played by shepherds,however, it could also be heard at the Royal Courts of Wales alongside the Crwth and Harp.
Today you can see the Pibgorn played by many Welsh folk musicians e.g. Carreg Lafar and Calan. It is also growing in popularity internationally amongst musicians from Europe and the United States.

Q: Is the pibgorn as loud as a Bombard? / Ydy’r pibgorn more swnllyd a Bombard?
A: No it is not as loud as a Bombard and can be easily played along side other instruments. Na nid yw’r pibgorn mor uchel a Bombard a gellir chwarae efo offerynnau arall yn hawdd.
Q: What is the other language used on this website alongside English?
A: The other language is Welsh. It is a member of the Brythonic languages spoken in Wales.
Q: Can you make pibgorn in different keys?
A: I make pibgorn in 2 keys currently, D and Bragod (mixed tuning)
Q: What is Bragod tuning?
A: It is a medieval Welsh tuning used for music in the oldest written harp music, the Ap Huw manuscript.
